Scholarships for Your Experiment in International Living

Go to School in a Foreign Country

By participating in an Experiment in International Living study abroad program, high school students who want to learn the language and culture of another country can spend the summer living with a host family in one of 25 countries around the world. Whether you want to learn more about French cuisine, participate in community service projects, or study the ecology of Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, it's an experience you won't soon forget.

The Experiment in International Living is an innovative program offered by World Learning. Based in Vermont, World Learning is the oldest private nonprofit educational services organization in the world. The organization is committed to promoting international and intercultural understanding through education, field projects, and training. About 1,000 students from across the United States participate in World Learning's Experiment in International Living (EIL) program each year.

Depending upon the program you choose, your EIL experience can last from three to five weeks. Fees are typically between $3,000 and $6,000. This includes the cost of airfare, meals, lodging, admission to special cultural events, and any necessary insurance coverage. Payment arrangements must be made before participants will be allowed to begin their chosen program.

Scholarships for Program Participants

Since World Learning is committed to helping a diverse group of students experience the benefits of international travel, the organization offers a number of scholarships for program participants. Most scholarships are based primarily on the applicant's financial need; although a small amount of merit scholarships are available.

Awards typically cover between 10% and 75% of the recipient's expenses. Approximately 35% of all Experiment in International Living participants receives some sort of scholarship assistance. However, it is important to remember that all scholarships for program participants are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship to cover the cost of your EIL experience, you may request an application form from a World Learning representative after you've been accepted into the program.

Scholarships for Program Alumni

Once you've completed your experience, you may discover that you're ready to explore more of the world around you. Study abroad programs designed for college students typically provide an opportunity to earn college credit, complete independent research projects, and develop fluency in a foreign language. The School for International Training is the division of World Learning dedicated to providing study abroad experiences for college students.

If you wish to apply to participate in an undergraduate study aboard program offered by the School for International Training, you'll be eligible for the EIL Alumni Study Abroad Scholarship. This scholarship is given to outstanding EIL program alumni who demonstrate a high level of financial need. The scholarship is valued at $3,000. The total cost of most undergraduate study abroad programs offered by the School for International Training is approximately $15,000.
